C’est le printemps en France and there is no where else we would rather be than in the South of France witnessing the launch of Hyères 2013! At the minute this is just a pipe dream but we are nevertheless super excited for this international celebration of Fashion and Photography to kick off! As some of you may know, Felipe Oliveira Baptista was selected as head of fashion jury, and Charles Fréger as head of photography jury for the annual festival spotlighting young promising artists in each field. To celebrate the lead up to the festival I wanted to share with you the trailer of Pierre Debusschere’s I KNOW SIMPLY THAT THE SKY WILL LAST LONGER THAN I . which is a book, an exhibition (first at Hyères but touring over the next couple of years), a 52min long film which is only visible in the exhibition space, a soundtrack created by the 254forest studio with models’ voices as well as Kanye West, a series of photographs and a website, launching today!
Followed are words by Natalie Khan describing Debusschere’s masterpiece.
“The eye travels. Every image, every frame forces us to gravitate. Reminding the viewer that the image has a beginning and an end, unlike the sky. But sometimes a photograph or a moving sequence aims to draw us away from the limits of the framce. The Belgian filmmaker, visual artist and photographer Pierre Debusschere deals with the layers of digital technology. His images are not concerned with perspective or distance, but deal with layers of surface. Each image entirely simulated, is about the pictorial process. The fashion image -still or moving -explores desire. Digital technology is free of materiality, unlike photography it is without any haptic reality. As the everyday use of fashion film and photography is driven by the need to make everything manifest, Debusschere uses images to mystify, surprise and confound. His portraits are staged, manipulated and directed, so that the camera now combined with digital means, has become like an instrument, not just an interpretative tool. His own agenda lies outside the realm of fashion and deals with the collision of inner and outer beauty, rather than a slavish following of trends. Debusschere offers us the certainty that we will never know the true image so carefully obscured, but we will already be familiar with the words, which mask the bodies or that face. His film deals with the emotion of a song, personal as well as universal. Words and image start together until the natural flow of the lyrics overtakes the image delayed by slow motion. But soon even the words are layered. Become louder, distorted and blur into a base. Just like the features underneath the layers, even a song gets swallowed and absorbed within the confines of digital culture.” Click here for website [sequence will start by clicking each image]
